(Want to Start Making Your Own Candles or Perfect Your 7 oz Soy Candle Formula?
In this guide, we’ll walk you step-by-step through the process using Golden Brands 464 wax and a CD 8 wick — perfect for clean burns and great scent throw.
Whether you're a beginner or scaling your candle-making business, this method is consistent, simple, and designed for success.
What You’ll Need (Materials Checklist)
Make sure you have all your supplies ready before starting:
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare Your Jar
Clean your 9 oz candle jar with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. Make sure it’s completely dry and free of dust or oils.
2. Secure the Wick
Apply a wick sticker to the base of your wick and press it firmly into the center of the jar. Use a wick centering tool to keep it perfectly aligned.
3. Melt the Wax
Weigh 7 oz of 464 soy wax. Use a pouring pitcher in a double boiler (or melter—our preferred method) and heat slowly to 185°F (85°C), stirring gently.
Tip: Don’t exceed 200°F to avoid burning off fragrance or discoloration.
4. Add Wax and Fragrance Oil Together
Once melted, measure 6.37 oz of wax into a clean pouring pitcher. Add 0.63 oz of fragrance oil for a 9% fragrance load. Stir gently with a whisk for 3 minutes to fully blend.
5. Cool the Wax
Let wax cool to 135°F (57°C) before pouring. It may begin to look slightly opaque—this helps ensure a smooth surface.
6. Pour the Wax
Carefully pour the scented wax into your prepared jar until it reaches 7 oz, or leave about 1 inch of headspace. Use your scale and center the wick with your tool or clip.
7. Cool and Cure
Let the candle cool undisturbed for 24–48 hours. Then cure with the lid on for 7 full days before burning.
8. Trim and Label
Trim the wick to ¼ inch (6 mm). Add a warning label to the bottom if gifting or selling.
Safety Tips for Candle Making
Never leave melting wax unattended.
Burn for at least 4 hours on the first use to ensure a full melt pool.
Always trim the wick to ¼ inch before lighting.
Don’t burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time.
Store candles in a cool, dry place with lids on.
Always perform a burn test to ensure your wick, fragrance, and jar work together. Every scent behaves differently!
