How to Choose the Right CD Wick for 464 Soy Wax Candles

When it comes to creating beautiful, high-performing candles with Golden Brands 464 Soy Wax, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing the right wick. The wick directly impacts how your candle burns, how well it throws scent, and how safe it is to use. Selecting the wrong wick can result in tunneling, poor scent throw, or even a dangerously hot candle.

This guide will help you confidently choose a wick based on your container size—from tealights to wide-mouth jars up to 4.5 inches in diameter.

When to Double Wick

If your candle vessel is wider than 3.75 inches, it may be a good idea to double wick your candle. This allows for a more even burn and prevents the candle from tunneling. For example, instead of using one CD 16 wick in a 4.5” vessel, try using two CD 8 wicks spaced evenly apart.

Always Burn Test

Even with a chart, the only way to ensure the perfect wick is to test it yourself. Every variable—your fragrance oil, jar shape, room temperature, and dye—can impact the final burn.

Here’s what to look for in your burn test:

Melt pool reaches edges in 2–3 hours

No excessive flickering or soot

Container doesn’t overheat

Wick stays centered and upright

No tunneling or sinkholes

Be sure to trim your wick to ¼” before each burn for accurate results.
